Glenwood Gardens

Morning Tea

An invitation was sent out by the lifestyle team from Glenwood Gardens to attend a morning tea for our residents.

They had a wonderful time, they sang songs, and had a beautiful morning supper with an allsortment of  cakes, sandwiches, and pasteries.

Thank you very much for the invitation, and kitchen staff for putting together the supper.

Ask Dr Brownlie

Skin and Soft Tissue Infections:

Thinning, fragile skin and poor circulation make seniors prone to infections like cellulitis (redness, pain) and pressure sores (bedsores).

Question: What causes skin and soft tissue infections?

Answer:  In aged care homes are primarily caused by bacterial pathogens like Staphylococcus aureus (including MRSA) and Streptococcus pyogenes. These infections are fuelled by age-related skin fragility, weakened immunity, poor circulation, chronic wounds/pressure ulcers, and high-density living, which aids pathogen transmission.

Question: Can this be treated?

Answer: Treatment often involves antibiotics, but they must be prescribed for a defined, appropriate duration to avoid over-prescription.

Preventative Measures: Strategies, such as maintaining skin integrity, proper hydration, hygiene, and regular, are critical for managing infections.

Important for families and staff to notice these signs.

Recipe Of The Month

Anzac Biscuits

Ingredients:

  • 1cup plain flour
  • 1cup rolled oats
  • 1cup desiccated coconut
  • 3/4cup white sugar
  • 150g / 5ozunsalted butter
  • 4tbsp golden syrup
  • 1tsp baking soda
  • Preheat oven to 180°C/350°F (160°C fan forced Line 2 baking trays with baking paper.
  • Mix dry: Mix flour, oats, coconut and sugar in a bowl.

Melt butter and golden syrup: Place butter and golden syrup in a saucepan over medium high heat and stir until butter has melted.

Baking soda: Add baking soda and stir to combine – it will fizz up, this is normal. Immediately remove from heat.

Biscuit dough – Pour butter mixture into flour and mix until just combined. The mixture will be crumbly but should stick when you press together.

Form patties – Scrunch / press 1 tablespoon of the mixture into balls, then flatten into patties. (Thinner = crisper, thicker = chewier centre, crispy edges) Place balls, 2.5 cm/1″ apart, on prepared trays.

Bake for 15 minutes, swapping trays halfway during cooking, or until deep golden. (Bake 12 min for chewy biscuits!)

Cool to crisp – Stand on trays for 5 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool – they harden as they cool!
